Welcome to 'Thoughts of a "Student Tailor"'. As with all new projects, perhaps the best place to start is at the beginning - why am I writing this, why has this project begun?
Well, my name is Aleksandar. I'm a twenty year old student, studying English Literature at Oxford University. From the age of thirteen, I have developed an ever increasing and all consuming love of great gentlemen's clothing. I'm passionate about tailoring, gentlemen's outfitting and sartorial fashion and I'm determined to find a place within the industry when I graduate.
I'm embarking on this journey to engage further with this passion. It's incredibly exciting; for the first time, I have a place to become really engrossed in the art of sartorial dress, let my thoughts out onto the page and discuss this world with other like-minded people, outside of negotiating entrance into a tailor's shop.
Recently, I made two of the most significant moves to date, to develop my knowledge of this beloved art-form. Firstly, around two years ago I started my own online shop, to fund my living costs at university, selling designer tailoring from a number of iconic British manufacturers; Paul Smith, Gieves & Hawkes, Aquascutum, Crombie and Reiss to name but a few. I also managed to save enough funds become a bespoke customer of the ever-talented tailors at The Cad and the Dandy, giving me my first real experience of a bespoke tailoring environment and realising a dream that I've held for many years - that of having a bespoke suit made.
These fascinating glimpses into the world of British tailoring have given me the opportunity to start to engage on a more substantial level with the bespoke tailoring industry, and this insight is something (along with my experience in high-end off-the-peg menswear) that I'd like to share with you. I hope that a young, engaging and committed perspective to sartorial menswear will inspire you to start thinking differently about the way you dress, and perhaps get you exploring, discussing and further reaping the rewards that the creative process of gentlemen's outfitting can deliver.
You can find me by searching for 'The Student Tailor' on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and if you have a hankering for some handsome off-the-peg designer tailoring at an affordable price, take a look at my Ebay shop. The links on the left of this page will take you wherever you want to go.
Naturally, I want you to enjoy this blog, and for this to be a success. For that, I'm going to need your help. Like the well-established sartorial menswear blogs, I'm hoping to build a community of tailoring-lovers around this site, so please, visit regularly and enjoy my writing. Comment on posts, feel free to let me know whether you agree or disagree, tell your friends and colleagues - and help me to spread the word of the Student Tailor!
Thank you,
Aleks
