Reflections on the Morning Routine

First thing in the morning is a time of the utmost importance to the fashionable chap. Many men who enjoy their clothes relish this time, and I enjoy it because its often the only point in a busy working day where you can find time for yourself.

It is a time that should not be taken for granted - clothes should not merely be thrown on thoughtlessly. It is a time for grooming, dressing and styling your day's attire and setting aside a few minutes for the process of getting dressed each day allows for the well dressed man to take the time to look his best and feel comfortable within himself.

Its a quiet few moments for reflection, a moment of calm in each day, before the rigmarole of the of the day begins and we have to leave the safe-haven of our homes and fight our way into the mêlée of the bustling streets and tough working day ahead.

I love getting dressed in the mornings, it wakes up the brain and gets it working, and gets me feeling creative for the day. Its the first opportunity in the day to really think - making connections and thinking critically about what to what to wear. What colours can I bring out between my tie and handkerchief, which trousers with which jacket? What weight or style of suit to wear given the weather, which shoes will best finish the ensemble? Do they match the leather on the belt and my watch-strap? Which tie-knot with this shirt-collar?

I'd encourage everyone to take some time to enjoy dressing each morning; its a moment of calm, of thought and of caring for the self at the start of the day. This isn't just wistful nostalgia either, starting the day in such a way - feeling pleased with your appearance really can have a positive effect, helping you to wake-up, feel confident and ready for the day.

Putting some thought into the day's ensemble, and enjoying the knowledge that with a little care and skill, the clothes in your wardrobe can make you feel that little bit brighter is a precious few moments, and every now and then it can be good to be reminded of this.

  1. I like to get everything ready the night before, I find that I have more time to enjoy the ritual of ablutions and dressing. Another thing I like to do is after closing the door on my way out is to say a big 'up yours' to the world sets me up for the day :)

  2. This ensemble, especially knowing you're wearing braces, is about as close to perfect as a man can get. Plus, your slender built accentuates it. Bravo!
